The hand-wrought metal lamps Chapeau Chinois I and II demonstrate Janette Laverrière's characteristic interweaving of Modernist and Art Deco styles. Here she combined adaptable functionality and industrial, Modernist materials with a whimsical bend echoing Art Deco elegance. The title and form are inspired by the hats of Chinese rice farmers, to whom she devoted her design. The lamps are made of sturdy metal and feature high-quality details like adjustable brass knobs, knitted electric cables, and Bakelite switches. They are elegant and light, each constructed of slim steel tubes and a thin, bent lampshade. The lamps come in two colors: one is entirely black and the other combines a white fitting and a red shade that has whimsical, dotted cut-outs. The lamps can be installed individually, in a pair, or as an auratic nest of light.
