Brass, wood, mirror
76 × 76 × 14 cm
Edition of 6
Laverrière's Freedom, hommage à Martin Luther King is a poetic ode to civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and US President Barack Obama. Deeply moved by Obama's 2008 election, Laverrière honored both of these important political figures with this mirror object. The piece consists of a small, square mirror mounted in the upper area of a black, round, anodized-brass plaque. The plaque is bisected by a stylized torch made of wood and painted in a cheerful palette of red, yellow, and purple. The bright red of the flames alludes to King's fiery speech at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington in 1963. The metaphorical composition is rounded out by King's iconic phrase, "I have a dream," written in blazing red in the lower area of the black plaque.
Evocations is a series of sculptural mirror objects that Laverrière begun in 1989, when she stopped accepting commissions and instead adopted a new credo, "It's useful to have useless things," that would guide her for the rest of her life. Seemingly useless as mirrors because of their convex and concave forms, elaborated frames, and their distortion of reality, the objects appear more like art objects than functional mirrors. These unique pieces are aesthetically and conceptually layered, based on political allegories, surrealistic shapes, poetical narratives, and Laverrière's personal interests.
