2001
Varnished rosewood, laquer, metal lid
33 × 50 × 8 cm
Edition of 6 + 2 AP
One prominent piece of Laverrière's Evocations is La Commune, hommage à Louise Michel, a rectangular mirror object that she designed in 2001 commemorating the writer, activist, and leader of the 1871 Paris Commune, Louise Michel. For Laverrière, the anthem of the Commune, the famous chanson Le Temps des Cerises (or "Cherry Time") evoked what Michel represents. The cherry-shaped mirror is mounted on a bright red background, on which the lyrics of the chanson are inscribed. The mirror is then embedded in a rosewood box with purple cherries and Michel’s name written on the side. The box is covered by a metal lid riddled with bullet holes, and hinges on actual bullet casings instead of manufactured hinges. Laverrière mastered a collision of unorthodox design materials by which she mirrored the brutality of the riots.
La Commune, 2001
at Thea Westreich, New York ⟶
Evocations is a series of sculptural mirror objects that Laverrière begun in 1989, when she stopped accepting commissions and instead adopted a new credo, "It's useful to have useless things," that would guide her for the rest of her life. Seemingly useless as mirrors because of their convex and concave forms, elaborated frames, and their distortion of reality, the objects appear more like art objects than functional mirrors. These unique pieces are aesthetically and conceptually layered, based on political allegories, surrealistic shapes, poetical narratives, and Laverrière's personal interests.
